The indicator stating a mission can be activated will only appear when the clock hits 20:00. This mission is only available at night, between 20:00-6:00 (8 PM to 6 AM) game time, around 15 minutes real time.
Despite what the PS2 strategy guide says (and this information is repeated in the Xbox and PC guide) this mission is not required to get 100% Completion. Only then will the player get the rewards. CJ can steal any number of items over several nights and eventually add up to the total. In order to complete this mission CJ must steal $10,000 worth of goods, but this does not have to be in the same session. In the PC version, CJ will don a ski mask automatically when the mission is active. Contrary to what is often mentioned in reviews, it is not necessary to wear a balaclava or ski mask or any other form of disguise, although players may opt to wear one anyway to "play the part". It is most obviously a solid source of income, and a farmable one at that, but a less obvious reward is that once you accumulate around $10,000 from repeating the mission (or around 25-30 items), you will be granted unlimited sprint (there will be no indicator of this onscreen), an incredibly useful ability therefore it may be worth going out of your way to reach this threshold as soon as you possibly can! Whilst not essential for 100% completion, Burglary Missions are helpful in two ways. Follow the marker on your mini-map and you'll often reach a back alley where you'll need to park the van inside a garage. Once you've grabbed all you can, you must drive the van to a lockup to secure the goods and complete the activity. You usually have more than enough time to get most of the crates, but if for one reason or another your time is short do not risk getting caught for the last one or two things.
You'll want to make sure that you move very slowly as you head out to the van. Picking up the crate forces you into standing, and therefore you are far more susceptible to making noise. You are looking for items to carry out to the van one by one these items (in the introduction mission) will be telegraphed by both a green arrow and a marker on the mini-map, as detailed in the image above. Whilst inside the house, crouching is recommended.
